Who can join the AmeriCorps "Coaches for Success" program?

In order to be a "Coaches for Success" member, an individual must:
*be a U.S. Citizen, or U.S. National, or a lawful permanent resident alien of the United States;
*be at least 17 years old; and
*have a high school diploma or GED or agree to obtain one while they are serving.

What do "Coaches for Success" members do?

Our members are placed in schools and community-based organizations such as Community Centers, and Indy Parks and Recreation family centers, after-school programs, and others. These schools and organizations are located throughout Marion County (Indianapolis-area), IN and allow us to reach those youth who are most in need of the help we can give. You start by being one caring adult who is willing to dedicate your time to youth who need you. You will boost their academic success through tutoring. You will help them make wise life choices through mentoring. You will help keep them safe through violence prevention workshops and you will help them give back through service.

Tell me more about this education award...

The education award is recieved upon successful completion of the term of service. This means that the member served all the hours they agreed to serve (1700 for Full Time, 900 for Part Time, 450 for Summer) and also met the other requirements of their contract (tutoring, mentoring, community service, etc.). This award is not made in cash; the amount of the award is placed into the National Service Trust in the member's name and they have up to 7 years to use it. This award is above and beyond the living allowance.

Why should I join?

Members join AmeriCorps for a variety of reasons. One of the main reasons is to make a difference for something they really believe in. A lot of times when people finish college, they start right into their career. As dedicated as they may be to this career, often times it's not the most fulfilling feeling. The opportunity to work directly with someone who needs the skills and guidance you can offer is rewarding and fulfilling.

Members also join to enhance their skills. College is great for teaching people the facts and figures but the real life applications can be a challenge. Also, most employers want to hire someone who has experience.. but you can't get experience until someone hires you! With "Coaches for Success", you get that experience. You'll be placed directly with a group of youth who will challenge you to use the knowledge you have to develop the skills you need.
